To do this right click on the item with the question mark and select Update Driver. Then having made sure you have connected your external hard drive or memory key with your backups on it browse to the backup of your Drivers folder and find the folder containing the right driver and select either the inf or dll file that Windows will let you click on and select OK. The OK button is greyed out if you have not got the right file. Follow the instructions and your hard ware will install and the yellow question mark will go away.
If your driver installation does not complete properly then make sure you selected the right folder. If the question mark is next to an item inthe Network Adapters section for example, make sure you didn’t try to install the graphics card adapter or Motherboard driver for example.
If you are sure you are trying to install the right driver but it still fails then try a search on the manufacturers website for the driver for your device, getting the model number off the device itself if neccessary.
Always start with the motherboard driver because these days, sound, network and video devices are often part of the motherboard rather than being seperate devices and installing the motherboard will quite often install everything else.
Sometimes this can get a bit scarry and complicated, but remember your PC is still in virgin mode so you can’t really do anything to hurt it by trying to install the wrong driver,t he worst case scenario is that you will have to go back to the earlier stage and reinstall windows again, but now you’ve done that already it’s not so bad is it!
Another source of information if things go wrong with the drivers, is to review any documentation that came withy our PC and see what devices it has got installed. If you have got a Dell machine then you are in luck as you can just go to the website and re-download all the drivers for your specific model, you may even be able to type in your service tag number of you have it and Dell will know exactly what machineyou have got.
Failing that, if you get really stuck then you need to find a driver magic website, or a local professional who does this kind of thing in their sleep. If you tell them you have reinstalled windows and need help identifying and getting the right drivers installed they will be able to help you.
